The Mississippi Rebels will introduce their second mascot since the removal of Colonel Reb in 2003.

The Land shark — which will be revealed Saturday in Oxford, Miss. — will replace Rebel Black Bear, who became Mississippi's mascot in 2010 following an eight-month process.

The origins of the new mascot can be traced to a term first adopted by the football team’s defensive unit in 2008. The school began the process to change the on-field costumed character in October 2017.

The Southeastern Conference has a long tradition of live mascots holding court on the sidelines (see Georgia's Uga). It has an equally long history of costumed characters rallying the crowd from the sidelines and stands.
