Team-by-team capsules from the SEC East and West heading into this weekend's games:
East Division
Florida (6-0, 4-0)
Next: at Mississippi State 7:30 p.m. Saturday
With four fumbles in Saturday's 23-20 victory over Arkansas, the Gators have nine for the season and have turned the ball over 11 times in six games for a turnover margin near minus-2. "We've just got to get it fixed," coach Urban Meyer said. The Gators fell to No. 2 in the AP rankings but were No. 1 in the first BCS rankings. ... QB Tim Tebow needs three rushing touchdowns to break the SEC career record of 49 held by Georgia's Herschel Walker.
Kentucky (3-3, 1-3)
Next: vs. Louisiana-Monroe 7 p.m. Saturday
The Wildcats were not flagged for a penalty for the first time since 1991 in last Saturday's win over Auburn. "I think a lot of people had given up on us as a team and were writing the season off, but these guys wouldn't have any part of that," coach Rich Brooks told reporters. "They stepped up, did some really good things and showed the type of football we're capable of playing." ... All-SEC CB Trevard Lindley (ankle) of Hiram is expected to return after missing the last two games.
South Carolina (5-2, 2-2)
Next: vs. Vanderbilt 7 p.m. Saturday
The SEC had to dig deep into its rule book in the wake of South Carolina's loss at Alabama. Coach Steve Spurrier alerted the league office that Alabama's Leigh Tiffin used white tape to spot kicks in the game. That is a violation of Rule 6-3(d). Bama should have been assessed a five-yard penalty each time. ... Meanwhile, Gamecocks AD Eric Hyman complained that the Tide was using artificial noise during the game. Commissioner Mike Slive's response was to send out clarification memos to all 12 schools.
Tennessee (3-3, 1-2)
Next: at Alabama 3:30 p.m. Saturday
Even when preparing for Bama, coach Lane Kiffin managed to tick off Florida."I think one poll got it right," Kiffin said of the AP rankings, which dropped the Gators to No. 2. "If you watch football and pay attention, I don't think there's any doubt who the No. 1 team is. Alabama has a great team, very well-coached, extremely talented, great special teams, great on offense, great on defense." ... Starting guard Vladimir Richard (Achilles, knee) is questionable.
Vanderbilt (2-5, 0-4)
Next: at South Carolina 7 p.m. Saturday
The Commodores have won the two meetings with USC since South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier made fun of Georgia losing to Vandy in 2006. In fact, the Gamecocks were ranked No. 6 in the BCS when they lost to the Commodores in 2007. They are 12-13 since. ... Freshman TB Zac Stacy (ankle) is expected to play.
West Division
Alabama (7-0, 4-0)
Next: vs. Tennessee 3:30 p.m. Saturday
Alabama denied Tennessee's request to wear its home orange jerseys Saturday. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban insisted he had nothing to do with it. "[Athletics director Mal] Moore asked me about it and I told him, 'Look Mal, it's your call,' " Saban told reporters. "It doesn't bother me. As long as we wear our traditional thing, I'm not worried about the other team and what they wear. I have never had anything to do with uniforms." ... All-SEC CB Javier Arenas (ribs) practiced this week and will likely play after missing the South Carolina game.
Arkansas (3-3, 1-3)
Next: at Ole Miss 12:20 p.m. Saturday
Coach Bobby Petrino has declined comment on the SEC's admission that their referees blew calls against the Razorbacks in the Florida game. But former President Bill Clinton chimed in. "Did you see that the SEC apologized for the one penalty that helped Florida in that one drive?," the well-known Hogs' fan said, according to the (N.J.) Trentonian. "... There were three other 15-yard penalties that helped [Florida] during that last drive."... The Hogs' scoring defense has improved more than 10 points per game from the first three games (32.2) to the last three (21.7).
Auburn (5-2, 2-2)
Next: at LSU 7:30 p.m. Saturday
The Tigers scored only one offensive touchdown in a 21-14 loss to Kentucky Saturday, their fewest points under offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn."We're looking forward to redeeming ourselves," Malzahn said. Never mind that they must get well on a Saturday night in Baton Rouge. . . Auburn leads the series 9-8 since league expansion in 1992.
LSU (5-1, 3-1)
Next: vs. Auburn 7:30 p.m. Saturday
LSU concentrated on its offense during the off-week. It's last in the SEC with 295 yards a game, 11th in scoring (23 ppg) and rushing (123.8 ypg) and 10th in passing (171.2 ypg). Despite the struggles coach Les Miles said he plans to stick with QB Jordan Jefferson and leave Jarrett Lee in a backup role.
Mississippi State (2-4, 1-2)
Next: vs. Florida 7:30 p.m. Saturday
New head coach Dan Mullen called Florida's Tebow, "the greatest player in the history of the game." Of course, he coached Tebow for the last three years in Gainesville and recruited him the year before that as the Gators' quarterbacks coach. Of facing Meyer, with whom he coached for 10 years, Mullen said: "It'll be tough because he's got an awful lot of talented football players standing to his left and right."
Ole Miss (3-2, 1-2)
Next: vs. Arkansas 12:20 p.m. Saturday
Despite rampant complaints, the touches for multi-threat WR/RB Dexter McCluster have actually gone down. He had three against UAB last Saturday, two catches for 21 yards and a one-yard run. "I want that football any way I can get it," the 5-foot-9 back told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. "I know I'm small, but I'm stronger than I look." ... CB Marshay Green (ribs, kidney), the SEC's second-leading punt returner, is expected play.
