Georgia Tech great Calvin Johnson has been named the Walter Camp Man of the Year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, recognition of his professional success in the NFL and his contributions to the community. Johnson, who retired from the NFL in March 2016 after nine seasons, will receive the award in January at Yale.
Past recipients include Warrick Dunn, Roger Staubach, Jerome Bettis and Dick Butkus.
In addition to his NFL career, during which he was a six-time Pro Bowler and set the single-season record for receiving yardage in 2012, Johnson founded the Calvin Johnson Jr. Foundation, which is dedicated to the education, training and social development of at-risk youth.
“Calvin Johnson was a standout on the football field, worthy of his nickname MegaTron” Foundation president Michael Madera said in a statement. “However, his work away from the field helping young people reach their goals on and off the field makes him a worthy Man of the Year recipient.”
