Larry Drew OK with Hawks' ‘healthy' frustration

Nov 13, 2010

Some of the visible frustration and fussing among players that marred the end of Hawks' 2009-10 season resurfaced during their deflating loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday.

But coach Larry Drew said that's not necessarily a bad thing.

"I want those guys upset. I want them mad that they didn't play well, they didn't play the way they are capable of playing," he said. "I want them them jawing at each other, but do it in a constructive way and allow that frustration to transfer to [Friday's] game and let's take it out on the Jazz.

"I think it's healthy for a team if it's done in the right way. But it it causes any kind of problems among the players, then it's a problem."

Hawks players said they had worked out their differences since the Milwaukee game.

"It took a game like that to wake us up to doing things the right way and staying together," forward Josh Smith said.

"I think for a moment there everybody kind of went their own ways on the court," center Al Horford said. "We came back together [Thursday] solid. We have to make a commitment to each other to always try to stick together even when the going gets tough."

During a candid video session Thursday, Drew pointed out his players' lack of effort against the Bucks. When the team gathered at the end of practice, Drew told them they shouldn't take the criticism personally.

"This is no time to be sensitive," Drew said. "I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong, and you have to be able to look in the mirror. There is going to be accountability.”

Williams, Evans return

Up until 90 minutes before the game against Utah on Friday, Drew didn't expect forward Marvin Williams to play. But after going through some shooting drills, Williams told Drew he was ready to play after missing four games with a knee bone bruise.

Hawks forward Mo Evans (knee) also returned from injury, though his minutes were restricted.

"We will play it by ear," Evans said. "I'm as close as I can get to being ready."

With the return of Williams and Evans, the team's only two small forwards, the Hawks had all of their rotation players available for the first time since the season opener.
