The Braves did not have room on their roster for struggling veteran outfielder/third baseman Jose Bautista but the New York Mets do.

The Mets signed Bautista to a one-year major league contract and he started in left field Tuesday night against the Marlins.

Bautista doubled in his first at-bat but struck out in his other two plate appearances.

The Braves released the 37-year-old Bautista Sunday after he hit .143 with two homers in 12 games. The Braves said Johan Camargo would be their starting third baseman instead.

The Braves cut Bautista 32 days after signing him to a minor-league contract and 16 days after bringing him up from Triple-A. He was 1-for-11 with seven strikeouts and seven runners left on base in his last four games in a Braves uniform.

Bautista, a 6-time All-Star, batted just .203 with 23 home runs and 65 RBIs last season for Toronto, when he made $18 million.

He has 333 homers in his major-league career.
