Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons left the game Wednesday against the Nationals after he injured his left foot while running the bases in the first inning.

“It’s the same ankle he sprained (before) but it’s not a sprained ankle,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Its more of an Achilles thing up high that bites him every once in a while. I didn’t want to take a chance on it. With a day off tomorrow and (him) playing only three or four innings we may be able to get him back on the field this weekend.”

The Braves are off Thursday before playing host to the Mets this weekend.

After his injury, Simmons remained in the game to play the field in the second and third innings and batted in the third but Ramiro Pena replaced him in the lineup for the top of the fourth. Pena went to second base and Phil Gosselin moved from second to shortstop.
