On Arizona starter Wade Miley

He was really good today. His slider had some tilt to it, some depth to it. HE commanded his fastball both sides of the plate. He caught some of our right-handed hitters looking with the ball coming back. We had some opporutnities. We had a great run, had a chance to win 10 in a row. We had a great homestand. It’s too bad we got beat 3-1 today. We had some opportunities with the right guys at the plate it just didn’t happen. Woody (Braves starter Alex Wood) was great today. How much more can you ask from Woody? He gets another loss, he only gives up two runs and loses. Only thing you can tell him is keep plugging away and the tide will turn eventually.

On how Wood gave up the two runs

That guy has gotten a lot of people, (Paul) Goldschmidt. He’s pretty legit. Three inches one way and it might have been foul instead of hitting the pole. You just tip your hat to Woody, he did an outstanding job.

On B.J. Upton’s 11-game hitting streak coming to an end

That’s one hell of a feat. Maybe start another one here tomorrow and get him going again. It seems like when he is on base creating some havoc we score runs. It’s hard to continue those hitting streak. That may be one of the records that may never broken, talking about Joe DiMaggio (56-game streak). It’s hard going that long getting hits.

***ALEX WOOD***

On making a couple mistakes and losing

That’s baseball for you. You go into the game telling yourself that there’s one guy you don’t want to let beat you and then he ends up beating you. Sometimes that’s how it goes.

On walking the pitcher to begin the inning

I think that’s the first time I’ve ever walked a pitcher. It happens. I thought I battled pretty good all day. Usually they make you pay when you walk anyone, much less the pitcher. It’s still really no excuse to let the one guy in their lineup you knew and had a good plan for, beat you.

On being relatively happy with his outing

From the standpoint of, my goal every time is to go out and get a quality start and keep us in the ballgame as much as I can. I feel all right. It’s hard to feel good after any loss, no matter what happens. It comes down to not letting their guy beat you. Goldschmidt is a heck of a ballplayer and Wade Miley had a good game, he’s a great pitcher.

On feeling good about his third start back in rotation after pitching out of bullpen

I’m still feeling some things out. I didn’t feel like I didn’t have my best stuff today. I felt a little out of whack. When you have days like that and can go out there and compete and give yourself a chance to win, that’s all you can ask of yourself.

On the winning streak coming at a good time

You always want to play well and, for us, we did it a lot of different ways during this streak. We’ve been kind of a power base team and we’ve won by just getting hits. Today we had a few opportunities. In the eighth inning we hit a lot of balls hard that we only got one hit out of. We are not going to win the rest of the games, it’s going to come to an end someday. But we did swing the bats really well again today and our pitching was obviously gfreat it just didn’t happen for us.

On Alex Wood making one mistake

Yeah, and it almost went foul. It was just one of those days where we hit balls hard right at people and they were able to get that pole. That’s all they needed. Wade pitched really well. It was a good streak.

***JUSTIN UPTON***

On D-Backs starter Wade Miley’s effectiveness

When he’s throwing his fastball on both sides of the plate and his slider is working and he’s got all three pitches working, he’s pretty tough. He did a good job against us today and we’ve got to tip our caps.

On Alex Wood making one mistake but having a good day

You make a mistake to Goldschmidt and a lot of times you are going to pay for it. (Wood) did a great job, too. We can’t be mad at him. Nobody can be mad at anybody. Both pitchers threw well. We just came out on the short end of it.
