The Braves on Friday activated outfielder Joey Terdoslavich from the 15-day disabled list and designated outfielder Eric Young Jr. for assignment.
Terdoslavich suffered a left wrist sprain during spring training and last week started a minor-league rehabilitation assignment.
“’Terdo,’ before he hurt himself, was having a hell of a spring,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Get him in there, get him some playing time. I don’t know how much we can play him or where but we will get him some at-bats.”
Todd Cunningham, Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis have been the everyday outfielders. Terdoslavich will join Jonny Gomes as a reserve.
Terdoslavich played in 64 total games with the Braves in 2013 and 2014 and batted .225. In nine rehabilitation games this year at three levels of the minor leagues he batted .310 with four doubles and a .389 on-base percentage.
“I got my timing about where I wanted it to be,” he said. “The swing feels good and the hand feels good.”
Young was projected to be the starting centerfielder after a good performance in the Grapefruit League. But the Braves acquired Maybin in a trade with the Padres on the eve of opening day and he eventually became a regular as Young struggled to produce.
Young was hitting .169 (13-for-77) with a .229 on-base percentage in 35 games. He had just 18 plate appearances since May 1.
“Cam has done a terrific job for us playing center field and playing every day,” Gonzalez said. “E.Y. became a piece—not his fault—he didn’t get a chance to play.”
