Josef Martinez’s bicycle kick against New England was voted the MLS Goal of the Year, according to results released by the league Wednesday night.

The goal happened at Gillette Stadium on Oct. 1. Brooks Lennon provided the assists. Martinez slammed the volley into the back post. It was his team-high ninth goal for the club that season.

An Atlanta United player has won Goal of the Year three times in its six seasons.

Hector Villalba won the award in 2017 for a goal against Orlando. Martinez won it in 2019 for a goal against Cincinnati. Fans vote on the goal of the year candidates.
