Braves' likely starting five

Who are the pitchers expected to start the shortened 60-game season for the Atlanta Braves.

Free-agent signee Cole Hamels, 36, has moved slowly through the rebooted training camp. He was stalled last weekend by a left-triceps tendinitis and still hasn’t faced hitters. Hamels will not start the season as expected. Max Fried takes his spot at No. 2.

Max Fried jumps into the second after earning a 4.02 ERA across 33 games (30 starts) last season, striking out 173 against 47 walks. He logged 165-2/3 innings after pitching 59-2/3 across the past two campaigns.

Mike Foltynewicz starts in the fourth spot this season. The 28-year-old, who improved after a stint in the minors last year, posted a 4.54 ERA in 21 starts last season. He also missed several weeks with an elbow injury last year.

Jhoulys Chacin, a 32-year-old starter, who pitched briefly for the Braves in 2016 was added on a one-year deal. Chacin, with a career record of 77-87 with a 4.03 ERA, made 24 starts with two teams last season, going 3-12 with a 6.01 ERA. He may hold the fifth starter spot until Hamels is ready to return.
