Photos: Contrast and contemporary fixtures revived comfy Buckhead cottage

The main bathroom was one of the toughest spaces to nail down in the house, Kerry Phillips says, from selecting the perfect tiles for the floor to adding a new walk-in shower. Interior designer Andi Morse completed the space with new light fixtures and mirrors from Rejuvenation, while little pops of greenery here and there dial up the saturation in the room. One of the coziest features of the house is this built-in breakfast nook, which Kerry Phillips notes was something a previous homeowner had added. Finding a table that would fit in the space proved to be a challenge until one of her husband’s woodworking relatives came through with a custom-built design for the couple. It’s one of the most special pieces in the home, Kerry says. Other built-in features of the home are the open storage cabinets under the counters that house items like cutting boards and cookbooks. Interior designer Andi Morse brought in some earthy, textured pillows to lend the breakfast nook some warmth and color. Later, a black leather chair from Pottery Barn was added for visual contrast. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

The bold botanical print from Art Classics bridges the gap between the breakfast nook and the kitchen, playing off the black butcher block countertops there. The modern light fixtures from Rejuvenation also help balance out more dated features, like the ornamental wainscotting that’s original to the house, and open up the house. “The kitchen to me has the most Southern feel of the whole house,” Kerry Phillips says. “It feels a little less our style, but adding in accents like the black chair in the breakfast nook, plus the funky light fixtures, gives the house a younger vibe.” Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

The dark butcher block countertops in the kitchen were part of what sold Kerry Phillips on the house. “To me, they never go out of style,” she says, “and they match the floor.” The cabinets are original to the home, and interior designer Andi Morse persuaded the couple to keep the hardware and maintain the white-tiled backsplash. One of the most charming features of the kitchen is its glass pantry, which a former homeowner installed, that maximizes storage space. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

For a couple that loves to entertain, a comfortable and inviting dining space was a must. Beyond the coastal-style rattan chairs from Four Hands and the Dovetail Furniture credenza, the collection of colored glassware displayed on the wall is the real conversation piece. It includes an assortment of Estelle Colored Glass pieces, plus some colorful stem glasses that used to belong to Kerry Phillips’ grandmother. “I love being able to have both of them next to each other,” she says. “It’s just a reminder of how things come back into style.” Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

“When you walk into the house, this living space is the first room you see, which I love because of the way it’s decorated,” Kerry Phillips says. It’s accentuated with warm leather accents, like the circular ottoman from Lee Industries and the cushy armchairs from Four Hands that Phillips appreciates for the strappy leather details at the back. It took nine months to find this Rowe sofa, though Kerry Phillips says it was worth the wait because of how well it fits the space. Interior designer Andi Morse added some accent pillows from Redefine Home Boutique, and instead of mounting a TV above the fireplace, an Anthropologie mirror was placed there instead. Phillips explains that this space is more of a casual gathering spot for entertaining guests with wine and snacks. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

Painting the TV room this deep inky shade of French Duvet by Sherwin Williams was a risky move, but one the couple felt comfortable making since they had already glimpsed it in person. “The inspiration was that my dad recently renovated a cute home in Southern California which has super high ceilings and was painted the same dark navy color. I’m really excited about how it turned out,” Kerry Phillips says. The couple also removed the existing doors that closed off the space to create a sense of flow, and padded out the space with furniture they had already collected over the years, like the Article couch, Rejuvenation Hardware credenza, and the West Elm coffee table. The entryway is filled with eclectic accents, like this burl wood console table from CB2 that’s rounded out with a cowhide rug from Athropologie and a black Pottery Barn vase. Other personal touches include the Artfully Walls prints, one that’s extra sentimental for Kerry Phillips. “The one of the guy laying in the grass reminds me of my husband, who’s obsessed with the lawn. We did so much work in the backyard, which used to be just a mud pit basically, and it’s his favorite place in the home,” she says. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

Neutral tones — from the Four Hands bed with a linen backboard to the creamy bedding from West Elm and Pottery Barn — add a sense of calm to the main bedroom, while the black table lamps from Lamps Plus keep the room from looking too washed-out. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

Being a huge fan of the photographer Gray Malin, Kerry Phillips was hoping for one of his beachy prints to fill the large wall facing the master bed. Interior designer Andi Morse found something similar that was still within budget to complete the space, and Phillips otherwise plays with symmetry and some choice fake plants (the room doesn’t get much light) to minimize clutter above and around the Noir dresser. “I think I’ve rearranged this dresser about a hundred times,” Phillips jokes. “It’s been a journey.” Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

This nook, which is now the place where the Phillipses drop their mail and packages, has a great sense of history. That’s because the room used to be the one spot in the house where former homeowners took calls on rotary phones back in the day. “What adds to the charm of the house is there’s still a phone jack in this spot,” Kerry Phillips says, a detail that older guests love to remark on. “Whenever I’m in this space I think of everyone in the past who has talked on the phone right here, which is pretty cool,” she adds. Kerry Phillips says that one of the best pieces of advice interior designer Andi Morse passed on was to redecorate the guest bedroom last. Morse advised the couple to invest in a great mattress and comfortable bedding, and otherwise use pieces they already had to complete the space (like the large striped West Elm rug, and the orange-tinged accents). “Every time we have people staying with us they remark on how comfortable the bed is,” Phillips says. “I’m so glad she gave me that advice.” Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

There weren’t too many changes made in the guest bathroom besides new light fixtures from and the rounded metal mirrors from Rejuvenation. The couple wanted to maintain some of the original fixtures in the house, like the tile floor that’s been there since the house was built in the ‘40s, plus the big cast-iron bathtub. The outdoor deck is one of the couple’s favorite spots to watch sports with friends and spend time in nice weather. It includes a seating area facing an outdoor TV, plus an eating area with built-in seating. Kerry Phillips loves just how private the space is, without anything looking out onto it. “It feels like its own living quarters outside the home,” she says. The Dovetail Furniture dining table and Four Hands chairs interior designer Andi Morse sourced have also held up perfectly through the weather, she adds. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

The outdoor chairs in front of the house get a lot of play in summer, and the spot has given the couple a prime opportunity to meet all of their neighbors. The vibrant yellow cafe table was sourced from a realtor who previously used it for staging houses, though its matching chairs were swapped out for these armchair-style loungers. The facade is what initially sold the couple on the house, plus a new roof that the they installed before they moved in. The green shutters and door are a relic of the old homeowners that the couple has faithfully touched up in the same color. Text by Lori Keong/Photo by Reynolds Rogers
