When we think of superheroes, DC and Marvel character may come to mind. But for many since the pandemic started, doctors and nurses are the new superheroes — perfect examples of what it means to truly lay your life on the line for someone you don’t know.

For one Rhode Island nurse, though, that service does not end just because her shift is over.

The last thing anyone wants to do after a long shift on your feet, is work some more. But no matter how many hours Phyllis Cayer has to work in a day, she cares for her community so much she couldn’t fight the urge to continue those long hours at home. Armed with her sewing machine, Cayer is back in the headlines once again after hand sewing 200 pillowcases for sick children at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Cayer first made headlines two years ago by jumping to the call of duty and hand sewing face masks for free, a task that created such an online buzz that she received $10,000 worth of donations — that she gave to her local food pantry. With a heart so huge, she’s a dedicated nurse and a selfless community leader.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital is a safe places for families and offers advanced care for children. With so many children spending extended time at the facility, receiving a personal hand-crafted gift lets each child know they are special, unique and loved. Phyllis puts care and attention into every pillowcase.

“While I’m making the stuff, I’m hoping I’m sending good vibes with it to whoever gets these little treasures. I wish them well and hope it puts a smile on their face” Cayer told Scrubs Magazine.
