A 1-year-old boy is recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered during a Saturday evening confrontation at a Southeast Atlanta apartment complex.

The shooting happened around 9:50 p.m. at Forest Cove apartment complex at 900 New Town Circle. Witnesses told police one group of men were chasing another group of men who were shooting at them, according to Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Lyons. The child was struck in the arm while being held by a relative standing outside in the parking lot.

The boy was transported to Egleston Hospital “alert, conscious, breathing and in stable condition,” Lyons said.

His grandmother, Keesha Jordan, told Channel 2 Action News that she saw a man with a gun running — possibly trying to get away from the shooter — shortly before gunfire erupted. She identified the victim as a 1-year-old named Rodriguez, nicknamed “Junior.”

Jordan told Channel 2 that she and the boy were leaving a birthday party when gun fire erupted.

“I laid him on the sofa,” she said, still gasping for air as she recalled the shooting. “I just seen all the blood. I just seen the blood.”

The child’s family made an emotional plea to Channel 2’s cameras for anyone with information to come forward.

“We can’t even live our lives. Our children can’t come outside. Every other day out here shooting. These people, everybody is too scared. Ya’ll need to step up and say something.”
