A motorist was charged with failure to yield Monday morning after investigators said she struck an Atlanta police cruiser while trying to make a left turn in Buckhead.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. Monday on Piedmont Road near East Paces Ferry Road in northeast Atlanta.

Yenenesh Gurmessa was northbound on Piedmont and was making a left turn onto East Paces Ferry when she struck Officer P. Marshall’s southbound patrol car, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.

Atlanta police dispatchers reported that the air bag in Marshall’s patrol car deployed, and that she was trapped in the wreckage.

Firefighters removed Marshall from the wrecked car, and while she had no visible injuries, she was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for further evaluation, Jones said.

Gurmessa was uninjured.

The southbound lanes of Piedmont Road were blocked for more than an hour, but reopened about 7:15 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
