This sounds like the adult version of “the dog ate my homework.”

A man in England failed to impress a judge by using the “dog set on my accelerator” excuse as a defense for speeding and leading police on a dangerous chase.

Jordan Winn, 23, was clocked at speeds of almost 100 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to the BBC. A police cruiser pursued the reckless driver, who made a dangerous turn and narrowly missed an oncoming car before coming to a stop.

When the driver opened the door, Buster, Winn’s Staffordshire bull terrier, took off. Winn built his defense around the dog, saying that the dog’s backside had become stuck on the accelerator.

The judge rejected Winn’s defense, calling it “ludicrous.” Winn, who admitted guilt in the charge of dangerous driving, was sentenced to 13 months in jail. He also is forbidden from driving for three years.

There was no word on Buster’s whereabouts.
