Scientists followed a Google method using Wikipedia pages and combined two algorithms to come up with the conclusion.
The first test was how many other pages link to the Wikipedia entry.
The second was referred to as CheiRank, it ranks outgoing links.
Second place went to Michael Jackson with Pope Pius XII coming in third.
However, when all two dozen Wikipedia languages were factored in the number-one spot went to Adolph Hitler.
In that ranking Michael Jackson was once again second and Madonna came in third.

"Our analysis shows that most important historical figures across Wikipedia language editions are born in western countries after the 17th century, and are male," authors told The Guardian.
A similar study was performed last year. That work named Karl Marx as the world's most important scholar.
