With a dry weekend on tap, construction crews will be out in full force along metro Atlanta interstates, taking advantage of the good weather.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is again asking motorists to avoid non-essential travel on I-20 west of downtown and on several portions of I-285.
Here’s the rundown on the roadwork:
Two southbound lanes of I-285 between Bolton Road and Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway will be closed, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. Monday, for concrete slab repair and replacement.
Sign work will require the closure of two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of I-285 between Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Buford Highway all weekend.
As part of the reconstruction of the interchange at I-285 and Atlanta Road, contractors will close two southbound lanes all weekend.
On I-20, bridge work will shut down two westbound lanes all weekend at the overpass above Lucille Avenue, while similar work will block two eastbound lanes between Six Flags Parkway and Fulton Industrial Boulevard from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.
On I-75 south of Atlanta, two northbound lanes will be shut down from Hudson Bridge Road to Mount Zion Boulevard, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and continuing through 9 p.m. Sunday.
No rain in the forecast:
Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton is calling for mostly sunny skies this weekend. The mornings will be chilly, with lows in the 40s, but afternoon highs should climb into the low to mid-60s Saturday and Sunday after only reaching the mid-50s on Friday.
Veterans Day Parade tops weekend events:
Veterans Day isn’t until Tuesday, but Atlanta’s annual Veterans Day Parade steps off downtown at 11:11 a.m. Saturday. The parade route begins at 345 Peachtree Street and ends at Centennial Olympic Park.
Other events this weekend include the Decatur Wine Festival Saturday on the Decatur Square, the Hawks-Knicks basketball game Saturday night at Philips Arena and the Morehouse-Kentucky State football game at 2 p.m. Saturday on the Morehouse College campus.
Finally, demolition crews will be imploding the old Executive Park Motor Hotel at 7 a.m. Saturday. The 19-story building, now owned by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, is at the corner of I-85 and North Druid Hills Road.
North Druid Hills Road and the I-85 northbound entrance and exit ramps, which are inside a 400-foot zone around the building, will be closed to vehicular traffic and pedestrians. DeKalb County police will coordinate a rolling roadblock to stop traffic on I-85 just before the implosion.
