The heat is already on Wednesday morning as metro Atlanta starts the day in the 80s, well above average for this time of year.

It is only going to get hotter once the sun comes up, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. The city is headed for the 90s for the second day in a row, with a projected high of 92 degrees.

“A lot of heat, but it’s gonna be dry with a mostly sunny sky to start the day,” Monahan said. “No weather issues as you head into school or drive into work. No rain to worry about.”

That will not be the case all day, however. Monahan said rain chances will start to increase around lunchtime, and scattered showers and storms will become more numerous by the start of the evening commute. A 40% chance of rain is in the forecast Wednesday, according to Channel 2.

“Some heavier downpours are likely by 5 p.m., with some locally heavy rain as you head home from work later today,” Monahan said. “We’ll still have some rain late tonight. That’s all going to settle down overnight, so we’ll start tomorrow morning dry.”

Thursday will follow a similar pattern, he said, with morning sunshine and a 40% chance of afternoon storms. A chance of rain is in the forecast each day through the weekend, according to Channel 2.

There are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates as the Wednesday morning commute gets started, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“Thankfully it’s nice and dry on the roads, so it’s a great commute starting out of Cherokee County on I-575,” traffic reporter Heather Catlin said.

While volume is building, trip times are also holding steady on Ga. 400 and I-85 out of the northern suburbs, she said.
