After days of 90-degree temperatures, Wednesday is expected to be a little cooler.

“We are actually going to settle in the mid-80s for our highs today,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

That’s because isolated showers and storms throughout the day will keep the heat in check, according to Monahan.

“With more rain, more clouds, it’s cooler,” he said.

Parts of North Georgia, including Ellijay, are already getting downpours, Channel 2 reported.

Things are off to a warm and dry start in metro Atlanta, where temperatures are currently in the mid-70s. Temperatures will increase as the day goes on, but they’ll top off at 86 degrees, breaking from the recent 90-degree streak.

The timing of the rain will also shift away from the pattern we’ve seen in the last few days. However, it might not be in the way that you want.

The wet weather will move in earlier in the day, with widespread downpours expected by noon.

“There will be more rain to come as we go through the morning,” Monahan said.

And it won’t let up.

“Be ready for what’s going to be a soggy day at times, with scattered downpours across North Georgia,” Monahan said. “Those continue beyond sunset tonight.”

Precipitation is in the forecast for the remainder of the workweek. Thursday will be the wettest day, according to the latest forecast. Rain chances increase from 60% Wednesday to a 70% Thursday, Monahan said.

Drier weather is on the way for the weekend, he said. Rain chances drop to 40% on Saturday and to 30% on Sunday.

Despite the wet pavement, it’s an easy ride through metro Atlanta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. There are currently no traffic hangups or trouble spots on major interstates.

Drivers should be aware of several road closures that are planned ahead of civil rights icon John Lewis’ memorial services in Atlanta.

The longtime congressman will lie in repose at the Georgia State Capitol on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s funeral service.

Lewis’ casket will be taken to the Georgia State Capitol Rotunda ahead of a 2 p.m. ceremony. Following the service, Lewis will lie in state from 3-10 p.m.

Auburn Avenue will be closed to traffic between Boulevard and Jackson Street from 5 p.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday. And Jackson Street will be shut down between Auburn Avenue and Irwin Street from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 1 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Additionally, drivers will have limited access to Washington Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Mitchell Street from 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
