A Cobb County judge sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for sexually-assaulting a 4-year-old girl, District Attorney Vic Reynolds said Tuesday.
Silvano Durarte Cruz, 31, of Stone Mountain, was visiting relatives on March 1 when he entered the child’s bedroom, locked the door, removed her clothing and assaulted her, Reynolds said.
“Every person should feel safe in their own home, and this is especially so for a small child,” said prosecutor Susan Treadaway. “ This is a parent’s worst nightmare. Remarkably, this child had the courage to make an immediate outcry, and the DNA evidence obtained by the police was overwhelming proof of the defendant’s guilt.”
Cruz pleaded guilty Monday as his trial was set to begin, Reynolds said.
Superior Court Judge Adele Grubbs sentenced him to 30 years, with 20 years to serve in prison and the rest on probation. However, he is a Mexican national and will likely be deported upon his release, Reynolds said.
