A man charged with killing a longtime acquaintance in Union City Sunday afternoon was ordered held without bond during a Monday morning court hearing.

Union City police Det. Gloria Hodgson said Benjamin Netherland, 43, was shot multiple times at his home on Raymond Terrace.

“Michael Shane Black was identified as the shooter by witnesses and family members at the scene,” Hodgson said. “The motive for the shooting appears to be an ongoing dispute between the shooter and victim.”

Hodgson said Black, 38, was arrested a short time later at his grandmother’s home in Fairburn, and was charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime.

Witnesses told Channel 2 Action News that Black pulled up to Netherland’s house, called him to come outside, and then allegedly opened fire. Netherland’s mother says she begged him to stop shooting.

“We were in the house when we heard some gunshots and I came to the door and Ben had turned around and the guy was standing there and he was still shooting and I was running toward the guy saying ‘stop, stop, stop’ and he just looked at me,” Sandra Netherland told Channel 2.

Black made an initial appearance before a magistrate judge at the Fulton County Jail late Monday morning, and was ordered held without bond until his preliminary hearing before a Fulton Superior Court judge in about two weeks.
