A former TSA security officer took more than a year’s worth of sick days over a five-year period to get treated for cancer.
As the doctors’ notes detailed, he needed the time for radiation, surgery and other treatment for abdominal lymphoma.
Only Marc Bess wasn't sick, investigators say. He faked the whole thing, Channel 2 Action News reported.
So federal authorities arrested him.
The details are contained in a criminal information document filed by the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. Bess allegedly took 2,240 hours of sick leave, or 280 days in total starting in 2009.
Bess, who is scheduled for a plea hearing on May 11 to face embezzling/stealing public money charges, is out on bond, Channel 2 reported. He could not be reached for comment.
The TSA said it began the probe and that Bess no longer works for the federal government. The U.S. Attorney’s office would not comment further.
