Jurors will begin a third full day of deliberations Monday in the murder trial of 25-year-old Luis Rijo De Los Santos, who says he was acting in self-defense three years ago when he killed a cross-dressing sex worker and injured two others in a pair of shootings in Riviera Beach and West Palm Beach.
The 12 jurors deliberated for about two hours Wednesday and all day Thursday and Friday, with much of the time spent listening to playbacks of testimony by Rijo De Los Santos and one of the victims.
If jurors convict Rijo De Los Santos of first-degree murder in Tyrell Jackson’s death, prosecutors will ask them to recommend that Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley sentences him to death. Jackson, 23, died after Rijo De Los Santos shot at him and his friend, Michael Hunter, after the two accepted a ride from the defendant in the early hours of March 24, 2012. Rijo De Los Santos also shot Terence Chatman in West Palm Beach minutes later.
All three men were dressed as women when they were wounded. Rijo De Los Santos said they three men were together when he first met them, he thought they were women and in both incidents they had tried to rob him.
