A major DeKalb County road was shut down for hours Friday morning after a crash involving a tractor-trailer sent multiple people to the hospital.

Authorities closed Covington Highway in both directions between South Hairston Road and Wesley Chapel Road to clear the multiple wrecked vehicles. The road reopened just after 8 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

According to DeKalb County police, a tractor-trailer hit an overturned vehicle in the roadway. The collision crumpled the big rig and sent some vehicles into a ditch.

At least two people were taken to a hospital, Channel 2 Action News reported.

No other details were released.

During the shutdown, DeKalb commuters crowded onto I-20, according to the Traffic Center. There are no remaining delays on Covington Highway and alternates are no longer needed.
