The westbound lanes of I-20 in Atlanta were shut down for about three hours Tuesday morning after a pedestrian was struck by several vehicles and killed.

It appears the unidentified man was attempting to cross the interstate near Moreland Avenue when he was hit about 6:30 a.m., police said. At least three other vehicles hit the man after the initial impact.

The driver of the first vehicle was taken to an Atlanta hospital for evaluation, according to the Georgia State Patrol. No charges are expected to be filed.

“It appears to be unavoidable by the driver based on the time of day and location,” a GSP spokesman told AJC.com.

The westbound lanes were shut down for several hours while state troopers investigated. All lanes reopened just before 9:30 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
