Georgia 400 commuters, prepare to be a little disrupted.
The early phase of work to eliminate the long-standing tollbooths on Ga. 400 begins today. Crews of workers will be removing old signs and re-striping the Peach Pass lanes to route traffic around the tollbooths.
Between 10 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday, two northbound lanes will be blocked between Lenox Road and Glenridge Drive. The closings will occur again during the same hours Saturday night.
Workers will reroute three lanes of traffic through the Cruise Card lanes and lower the speed limit through the area to 45 mph.
Portable message signs will be installed to keep drivers informed of changes along the corridor as the demolition continues through next fall.
But don’t put your coin purse away just yet. The 50-cent toll will remain until the week of Thanksgiving. It will cease, weather permitting, sometime around Nov. 21, according to the State Road and Tollway officials.
No heavy demolition is expected to take place until after the winter holidays.
Southeastern Site Development Inc. of Newnan was contracted by the Georgia Department of Transportation to perform the demolition for $4.5 million.
