A Gwinnett County high school student was in stable condition late Friday after being struck by a vehicle hours earlier in the day as she sat on a curb waiting for a school bus, authorities said.
The victim, Dominique O'Conner, sustained a broken pelvis, injuries to her hand and cuts on her face but was expected to recover from her injuries, Channel 2 Action News reported. The Berkmar High School ninth-grader was being treated at Gwinnett Medical Center.
The incident happened on Champions Parkway at Cruse Road in Lawrenceville, according to Gwinnett County police spokesman Ed Ritter.
“She was sitting on the curb waiting for the bus to arrive, and some car … came careening around the corner, I guess, and lost control and ran up on top of her,” the teen’s mother, Muriel O’Conner, told Channel 2.
Gwinnett County police were investigating the morning incident. Information about the driver was not immediately available.
Muriel O’Connor said she is thankful her daughter is expected to recover.
“I am blessed,” the mother said. “This could have been a lot worse than what it is.”
