A driver has been charged in the Friday morning wreck that killed a child, police said.
The girl killed, 12-year-old Symia Knight, was critically injured when Robert Culver’s pickup truck clipped the back of the Chevrolet car she was riding in, police said.
Symia later died in a hospital, Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.
Culver has been cited with misdemeanor second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield, Jones said.
“The driver of the white truck was travelling eastbound and tried to make a left turn,” Jones said. “As the grey vehicle was coming through the intersection (the truck) clipped the vehicle in the rear and sent it into a spin.”
Symia was in the back seat.
The Chevrolet came to rest in the grass near the intersection, police said.
Jones said the light was green when Culver turned, but police believe the driver was still at fault: “He did not allow her to clear the intersection before he made the turn.”
The woman driving the car also was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for her injuries, police said.
The accident happened shortly before 7:15 a.m. at Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Fulton Industrial.
