A fatal wreck involving a motorcycle shut down several lanes of I-75 South in Marietta for more than two hours Tuesday.

A 63-year-old Cartersville man was killed Tuesday when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a box truck on I-75.

The deadly crash shut down several southbound lanes in Marietta and caused hours of significant traffic delays. It occurred shortly before 6 p.m. between the North Marietta Parkway and South Marietta Parkway loops.

According to Marietta police, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with the box truck when traffic lagged because of another collision farther south on I-75.

The motorcyclist, identified by police as Dennis Wolk, died at the scene.

“For reasons unknown at this time, Mr. Wolk, the operator of the motorcycle, failed to slow down or stop with traffic and struck the back of the Peterbilt truck,” police spokesman Officer Chuck McPhilamy said Wednesday in a news release.

Charges are not anticipated for the truck driver, McPhilamy said. He was not injured in the wreck.

The investigation blocked traffic in Marietta for more than two hours before it was cleared about 8:15 p.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
