A pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck and killed on a major Clayton County highway early Tuesday morning.

The man was trying to cross Tara Boulevard around 6 a.m. when he was struck by the southbound truck, according to Jonesboro police. Not realizing what the truck hit, its driver pulled over to the side of the road.

A Jonesboro officer saw the truck stop, went to investigate and discovered the man’s body, police said.

He has not been identified, according to police.

The investigation shut down all southbound lanes of Tara Boulevard near Ga. 54 and Flint River Road for nearly three hours. The road was reopened at 9:15 a.m., according to the Clayton County sheriff’s office.
