Two pedestrians were killed Friday afternoon after a three-vehicle wreck on Ga. 138 at Buffington Road in south Fulton County, police said.

The two people were involved in a fender bender and were out of their cars to check damage when a truck belonging to Fulton County slammed into the vehicles, Channel 2 Action News reported. The victims were identified as Murphy McKinney and Mary Hughes.

McKinney, who turned 84 last week, died at the scene and Hughes was taken to a hospital where she later died, the station reported.

The Fulton County public works employee who was driving the truck, who was not identified, was treated for injuries that were not life threatening, spokeswoman Jessica Corbitt said Saturday in a statement.

“Fulton County is cooperating with Union City Police Department’s investigation of the incident,” Corbitt said.

The road was shut down for nearly three hours and drivers were urged to use alternate routes.
