A driver faces multiple charges in connection with a 5-car crash that shut down all northbound lanes of I-75 in Cobb and Fulton counties and sent three people to area hospitals, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash happened about 6:05 a.m. Monday when a northbound 2002 Lexus ES 300 left the roadway and hit a traffic barrier on the right shoulder, the GSP said. The Lexus returned to the travel lanes and was hit by four cars at the Chattahoochee River bridge.

Driver Joseph Meis, 33, of Atlanta, was charged with failure to maintain a lane, driving on the right shoulder, suspended registration and driving with no insurance, the GSP reported.

Two people were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital and one person was taken to Atlanta Medical Center. Their conditions were not known.

The crash led to heavy delays during the morning rush. Lanes reopened just before 7 a.m.
