Two people were injured in a nasty crash that shut down I-285 East in DeKalb County for an hour and left debris scattered across the interstate.

The accident happened before 5:40 a.m. Wednesday near Flat Shoals Road, DeKalb County fire Capt. Eric Jackson said.

One vehicle was stalled in an outer lane when another hit it, starting a chain-reaction crash that involved three vehicles, Jackson said.

The driver of the stalled vehicle and a driver in another car were taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries, Jackson said.

There were no other injuries reported.

The debris that littered the interstate was from the stalled vehicle.

Eastbound lanes of I-285 reopened about 6:45 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

“The outer loop of the Perimeter is a gridlock mess in DeKalb County,” the Traffic Center’s Mark Arum said.

Traffic was still jammed from Moreland Avenue.

Drivers were urged to use the northbound Downtown Connector as an alternate route.

No other details were released.
