North Georgia has struggled to get a little sunshine the past few days, but Thursday should be much brighter.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said all indications point to a beautiful day. There will be some high clouds around, he said, but the sky should be more blue than gray, and there is no rain in the forecast Thursday.
“Finally the sunshine will come out,” Monahan said. “It will be with us most of the day, and that’s going to take us up into the mid-50s later today.”
The region just has to get through a frigid start first. Metro Atlanta is at or below freezing to begin the day. Monahan said it is the kind of cold that “is going to hit you right away as you open the door.”
The city will eventually make it to a projected high of 56 degrees, according to Channel 2.
“Temperatures are going to go from mid-50s in the sun today into the low 50s tomorrow, and really cold this weekend,” Monahan said. “We’ll be in the low 40s for highs on Saturday.”
There is also a 30% chance of rain to end the week. Monahan said a cold front will arrive overnight, spreading some showers across North Georgia early Friday morning. There is a moderate rain impact for the Friday morning drive, he said.
“All week long I’ve been telling you there’s just not a lot of moisture with this (front), and there isn’t,” he said. “But maybe enough to squeeze out a couple of isolated sprinkles early tomorrow morning.”
Monahan said the rest of Friday should be dry. Over the weekend, leftover moisture and freezing temperatures could make for some snow flurries in the mountains, according to the latest forecast.

There are no problems on the roadways early Thursday morning, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
“It’s chilly out there, but it’s smooth and dry on the interstates,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said. “The downtown connector early on: delay-free.”
