1. Top Ga. lawmaker criticized for Klan comments
Rep. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, is taking heat for his comments about Civil War history and the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. Benton said in exclusive interviews with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Klan "was not so much of a racist thing but a vigilante thing to keep law and order." 3. APS proposes school closures, charter school management
In an effort to improve some of the city's worst schools, Atlanta school superintendent Meria Carstarphen said in an announcement Thursday that she has plans to close one school, merge four others and put five others under the management of charter school groups. Read more.
4. Heavy prison sentences for 4 teens in violent Atlanta home invasion
The four teenage boys who were involved in the violent home invasion that left a northwest Atlanta father — Michael Lash — critically injured with gunshots to both legs are facing heavy prison sentences for their crimes. Following a 10-mile chase that shut down I-75 southbound for more than six hours on Wednesday, Israel Vladimir Rodriguez and Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jacob Fields exchanged gunfire. After both were taken to the emergency room, Rodriguez died and Fields was released from intensive care the next day. Read more.
