Q: How did the hijacker get on the plane? Can you give more details about the explosives?

—Eddie Webster, Douglasville

A: Authorities were trying to determine how Seif Eddin Mustafa, who claimed to have explosives to hijack a flight from Alexandria, Egypt, took components of the vest through security.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry released a photo of Mustafa going through security before boarding EgyptAir Flight 181 on March 29.

Authorities later determined that the explosives were fake.

The explosive vest was made from cellphone cases, The Associated Press reported, and Dutch passenger Huub Helthuis told the AP that it had “wires and everything. … The bombs were fake, but you couldn’t know that.”

The plane, which was scheduled to go to Cairo, landed in Cyprus, where Mustafa surrendered and was arrested.

Q: I’m curious to know what became of the bill that proposed to more fairly weigh difficult classes when considering the GPAs of those on the HOPE scholarship. I haven’t been able to track it.

—Peggy King, Marietta

A: The Georgia General Assembly passed HB 801, which amends Title 20 of Georgia Code to provide a half-point GPA increase to college students who take more strenuous math and science classes.

This is designed to help students on HOPE maintain a 3.0 GPA and keep the scholarship.

The bill states it includes “certain coursework in computer science as optional rigor requirements; to provide for weighted scores for certain college coursework; to clarify definitions; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.”
