William Hester of Mesquite admitted to police that he was holding a gun when it discharged, killing 16-year-old Jakiyah Wrightsil.

Police responded to a north Dallas apartment complex around 4:30 a.m. Sunday as a party was dispersing, the television station reported.

Witnesses said several people were “playing” with a gun when someone pointed it at Wrightsil, Dallas police Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said. The gun discharged and Wrightsil was shot in the head, Black said.

Wrightsil was found unresponsive in the living room of an apartment, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Police said in a release Sunday night that they arrested Hester. He is in the Dallas County Jail on a manslaughter charge, which is a second-degree felony, WFAA reported.
