Federal marshals and Clayton County sheriff’s deputies captured a man Wednesday who is suspected of playing a role in the shooting of a Tennessee police chief from Friendship.

Javarius Durrell Mann was arrested on a probation violation of a robbery conviction in Jonesboro by the U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill said.

Mann could also face attempted murder, robbery and other charges when he returns to Crockett County in northwest Tennessee, where Friendship Police Chief Bill Garrett was shot at a Dollar Store while off duty in May 2012, Hill said in a prepared statement.

In July, a Tennessee jury convicted a Memphis man of attempted murder and the robbery in the shooting of Garrett while Mann was a fugitive.

Investigators said Craig Michael Barbee, now 41, of Dyersburg, Tenn., tried to rob the Dollar Store in Friendship but was unable to open the safe. He shot Garrett in the torso after finding him in the store and robbing him and his wife, according to media reports. Garrett was seriously injured but survived the shooting.

Investigators contend Barbee ran from the store and escaped with two other men, Guary Wallace, now 58, and Mann, according to media reports.

Mann still has not been charged in the case, Hill said. Wallace and Barbee have been convicted of attempted murder, armed robbery and other charges in the case. In October, Wallace was sentenced to 90 years in prison. In 2013, Barbee was sentenced to 106 years, according to an FBI press release.

Also arrested Wednesday for hindering apprehension of a fugitive by allowing him to hide in an attic Wednesday were: Morris Mann, a brother; Lakisha Hinton, Javarius Mann’s girlfriend; and Marilyn Sharpe.
