Suspect in death of man shot 8 times arrested in East Point

One of two men wanted in connection with the October 2014 death of a man shot eight times in College Park has been arrested, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

Officers with the department’s fugitive task force Tuesday arrested Marquis Antonio Acree, 30, at a location off Spanish Trail in East Point, Master Sgt. Jeff Hightower said in an emailed statement.

Police have been looking for Acree and Fernando Cartavios "Smoochie" Bennefield, 22, since the Oct. 3 shooting death of 36-year-old Timothy Carthan at the West Cove Apartments. Officers responding to the complex on West Fayetteville Road found Carthan with multiple gunshot wounds, Hightower said.

According to witnesses, an armed man shot Carthan once, then seven additional times after he was already down, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Carthan was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his wounds, Hightower said.

Acree will be transported to the Clayton County Jail later Wednesday, Hightower said.

Anyone with information about Bennefield is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS or College Park police at 404-761-3131.
