A man accused of stealing a donation jar from a Fairburn gas station made a key mistake that led to his arrest.
He was caught on camera.
Pictures released by police and the media reports that followed led the suspect to surrender Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Darreon Butler, 33, of Stockbridge, was charged with violating the city’s disorderly conduct ordinance, Sgt. Anthony Bazydlo said.
Donations collected at the BP station on Ga. 74 were supposed to benefit a local charity. But the person accused of swiping them this week, identified Wednesday as Butler, had other plans, according to police.
"The donation jar was for the pregnancy care center, and we don't think this man was pregnant," Fairburn police posted on the department's Facebook page.
Surveillance cameras caught the man in action as he stood by the counter and grabs the jar and later stood in the store holding it.
