Metro Atlanta residents looking to spend Sunday at the lake or pool may want to think twice about jumping in the water.

With breezy conditions and an afternoon high of 77 degrees, swimming conditions might be less than ideal, according to the latest forecast.

“Temperatures aren’t getting out of the 70s and winds are picking up,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon said. While the rain is expected to hold off for the holiday weekend, Sunday’s high will run about 7 degrees cooler than average for this time of year.

Evenings will be even colder, with overnight temperatures dropping into the low 50s in Atlanta, according to Channel 2. In parts of far North Georgia, some residents might even wake up Sunday morning to temperatures in the 40s.

“You can certainly give the ACs a break and maybe break out an extra blanket,” Deon said. “You might just need it.”

The cooler weather is a stark contrast from the 90-degree days Atlanta residents saw earlier in the week, but Sunday should still be a great day to get outdoors, Deon said.

“It’s going to look fantastic,” Deon said of the holiday weekend. “We’ll see a lot of sunshine, especially Sunday going into Monday.”

Temperatures should be back to 83 degrees by Memorial Day, which is good news for those with poolside plans. In addition, the rain is expected to hold off until at least midweek.

There are fewer construction projects planned over the long weekend, but drivers will likely still have to compete with Memorial Day travelers and stadium traffic. The Atlanta Hawks are looking to win Game 4 of their playoff series against the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon. With State Farm Arena back to full capacity, drivers can expect to see increased traffic downtown ahead of the 1 p.m. tipoff.

The Atlanta Braves are back in town Monday evening to host the Washington Nationals, so Cobb County drivers should expect delays near the I-75/I-285 interchange. First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. at Truist Park.
