A Newton High School assistant basketball coach has been fired and faces charges of enticing a child for indecent purposes after allegedly “sexting” with a 15-year-old student.
James Carter, who had been an assistant boys basketball coach at the school since August, was arrested Oct. 29 following allegations that he sent sexually oriented text messages to the girl, according to investigators.
After receiving the text messages for three weeks, the girl showed them to her caregiver, who alerted authorities, according to Channel 2 Action News.
“After we were notified of the incident, we conducted a thorough investigation and through that investigation we were able to also retrieve messages off Carter’s cell phone,” Newton sheriff’s office spokeswoman Deputy Courtney Morrison told Channel 2.
Carter, who also served as a special education para-professional at the school, was fired Oct. 24, according to Newton County Schools spokeswoman Sherri Davis-Viniard.
“These are very serious allegations and this is something that we definitely will not tolerate in our school system,” Davis-Viniard said.
Carter, meanwhile, is free on a nearly $3,000 bond, according to Channel 2.
