A state government committee set up to examine the role of the federal government in public education will hold its first meeting on Wednesday at the Coverdell Legislative Office Building Wednesday from 1:30 to 5 p.m. in room 606.
The committee, called for with the passage of House Resolution 550, is expected to review federal education mandates and the origins of Common Core, the national set of academic standards some now view as a federal intrusion into state authority over public education.
The committee will be composed of 15 members, including three teachers, three parents or grandparents, the chairwoman of the state Board of Education and five members of the state House of Representatives.
House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, appointed the committee members and is expected to attend the committee’s first meeting. The committee will hold several meetings in different parts of the state.
The Committee will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 from 1:30 – 5 p.m. in room 606 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building, 18 Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia, 30334.
The Role of Federal Government in Education Study Committee was created by HR 550, and the appointments were made pursuant to the resolution. Click here to see more information about this study committee.
