Military veterans enrolled in the University System of Georgia would get academic credit for coursework completed while in service and would be allowed to pay tuition in installments under bills proposed by state Sen. Ed Harbison, D-Columbus.

Harbison, chairman of the Senate Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee, is a Vietnam War veteran.

Senate Bill 328 asks the Board of Regents to recognize educational instruction received by service members while in the military, giving them credit or exemptions from required coursework in school. Senate Bill 327 aims to help veterans who receive financial help through programs such as the GI Bill, essentially allowing them to make payments as they receive funds from the federal Veterans Affairs Department.

Harbison has also signed on to Senate Bill 329, sponsored by Sen. Lester Jackson, D-Savannah. It would create a "returning veterans" task force to assist those just back from combat.
