Georgia motorists can again obtain specialty license plates featuring the Confederate battle emblem — though the plate is slightly toned down from the original version.

The state Department of Revenue and the Georgia chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans said last week that they had reached an agreement on the redesign of the vehicle plate — which was made public Wednesday morning.

Gov. Nathan Deal ordered a reworking of the license plate in June, after nine black worshippers were gunned down at a church in Charleston, S.C. Police have tied the shootings to a suspect they have described as a white supremacist.

But Deal stopped short of calling for the Sons of Confederate Veterans tags to be phased out or eliminated entirely, as leaders in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia ordered over the summer.

The governor said Tuesday that he felt the new design was appropriate.
