Georgia’s baby boys might share a name with a father, uncle or some other elder, but for girls, names from a generation ago have fallen out of favor.

Nearly all of Georgia's top 20 names for baby girls from 1994 have vanished from the 2014 list.

One big influence in choosing what to call a daughter is names parents hear frequently, according to Jonah Berger, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Berger studies names and naming trends.

For example, after Hurricane Katrina, there was a nationwide spike in parents choosing names that begin with K.  The children were not named for the storm, but they did get names like Kimberly and Karen.
