Windshields were shattered and roofs were dented Wednesday night when baseball-sized rocks fell from a Cobb County bridge and onto the I-75 express lanes below.

Marietta police said it is possible someone tossed the rocks, some as big as footballs, onto the vehicles from the Allgood Road bridge between 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. More than 10 vehicles were damaged, and reports are still coming in, according to police spokesman Chuck McPhilamy.

“We are so unbelievably grateful that the drivers were able to maintain control of their vehicles, and no one was seriously injured,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

Some of the vehicles were severely damaged, McPhilamy said. One woman drove several miles with a large rock lodged in her windshield until she could safely pull over and remove it.

Investigators are asking other drivers with damage to contact the police department to make a report. More than that, McPhilamy said, they need witnesses to come forward.

“If you were in that area and saw something suspicious that may be related, we desperately need you to come forward,” he said. “It’s an active investigation and we are looking at different cameras in the area, and we are exploring different ways to try to prevent this from happening again.”
