A Fairburn police officer was treated for cuts after being hit in the face with a liquor bottle while arresting a burglary suspect early Wednesday, police said.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was patrolling warehouses on Oakley Industrial Boulevard “in direct response to a recent theft that took place at one of the warehouses,” Fairburn police Sgt. Anthony Bazydlo said.

“The officer observed two vehicles parked at one of the warehouses with their lights turned off,” Bazydlo said. “The officer moved towards the two vehicles, which immediately started driving away.”

He said the officer checked the license plates and discovered one of the vehicles was reported stolen to Atlanta police.

The officer attempted to pull over the stolen vehicle, but the suspects refused to stop, leading police on a chase up I-85 to I-285 before ending at Riverdale Road and I-285 in Clayton County.

“The suspect vehicle then stopped and the driver and passenger fled the vehicle on foot,” Bazydlo said.

He said during a foot pursuit, the driver, Karl D. Hudnall, threw an empty liquor bottle at officers, striking one in the face.

“The officer sustained a laceration which required stitches as well as a minor concussion,” Bazydlo said, adding that the officer was treated at a local hospital and released.

Hudnall, 49, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, criminal attempt burglary, multiple counts of obstruction of an officer, fleeing and eluding police and theft by receiving, Bazydlo said. He said Hudnall complained of chest pains at the time of his arrest and was taken to a local hospital.

Officers were unable to locate the second suspect who ran from the stolen vehicle.
