A 24-year-old woman was killed Thursday when she tried to cross a Paulding County road and was struck by a deputy, investigators said Friday afternoon.
Shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, Deputy Nathaniel Hicks was southbound on Ga. 92 when he hit Ashley Donaldson, who was attempting to cross in the area of Seaboard Avenue in Hiram, according to Tracey Watson, spokeswoman for the Georgia State Patrol. Donaldson, of Douglasville, ran from Seaboard Avenue across the northbound lane of Ga. 92 and into the southbound lane, where she was hit by 23-year-old Hicks, Watson said.
The deputy was en route to a call and was traveling at normal speed, according to witnesses. He did not have his emergency equipment activated because he was responding to a low-priority call, Cpl. Ashley Henson with the Paulding Sheriff’s Office.
Donaldson was taken to WellStar Paulding Hospital, where she later died. The deputy’s duty status remain unchange Henson said.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.
