BASEBALL MOVES

So we lost the Braves; it’s time to get over it

Regarding “How Atlanta lost Braves to suburbs” (News, Dec. 22), come on, AJC. The Braves have moved to the suburbs. We understand that. And whether the mayor or others in his administration miscalculated the Braves’ options or not is not news.

Making someone look good and someone look bad serves no constructive purpose. Maybe there was a miscalculation. Maybe it was a coup on the part of Cobb County officials. Maybe it was simply a good business decision on the part of both the city and the Braves. But in any event, so what?

Email communications, face-saving quotes, upset citizens and projected tax and income statistics notwithstanding, if your reporters cannot find a graft angle, then in continuing to give ink to the process of what led up to the move, you are only attempting to make news, rather than reporting it. Give your readers a break.

GOOD WORKS

In Christmas season, faith, deeds go together

I would like to publicly thank the Rev. Joseph L. Roberts Jr. for his recent guest column, “Connecting faith and deeds” (Opinion, Dec. 21). It is so relevant at this time for all.

OFFENSIVE WORDS

To bury the ‘n-word,’ we should stop using it

I take two issues with the Leonard Pitts column “Let us bury desire to use a self-denigrating word” (Opinion, Dec. 19).

Slavery has been around since before ancient Greece. During its horrifying history, nearly every race and religion has been enslaved and sold like animals with their families torn apart, or even worse. Consider the ethnic cleansing of Native Americans, and the systematic genocide of Jews that happened in the 1940s .

The “n-word” persists because we keep using it among ourselves — whether in greeting, or in describing another black person. In the 1960s, calling ourselves “black” turned around the insult and instilled a sense of pride. Think of Muhammad Ali declaring, “Black is beautiful.” But what does regularly using the “n-word” do for us? I’ve never heard any other race using slur words among themselves.

The best way to bury the n-word is to stop using it.

MOON SHOT

China’s reputation follows it into space

It was recently reported that China has landed a spacecraft on the moon (“China becomes third nation to land spacecraft on moon,” News, Dec. 15).

So now, we’ll have to check for lead in the moon dust.
